Dear Fellow Travelsoul,
Today I want to talk about a city that has been my home for some time in my life. Ljubljana feels like the cutest capital on earth, where cozy charm meets picturesque architecture. Therefore, I am more than happy to share my sight-seeing tips, favorite activities, and secret spots with you. This city can easily be explored on foot, thanks to its small size. However, for other ways to get around in Ljubljana, you find all the information you need at the bottom of this post.
If you are seeking further inspiration for your Slovenian adventure, please check out my personal recommendations in this post.
Prešernov Trg: The Main Square
Prešernov Trg is the main square of Ljubljana holding some of its most iconic attractions. For example the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, its pink color making me happy every time, filling my camera roll with thousands of pictures that look just the same. Directly across lies another famous landmark: Ljubljana’s Triple Bridge, offering a passage over the flowing river. I suggest leisurely strolling through this area, immersing yourself in the old town’s charm.
A National Symbol: The Dragon Bridge
Ljubljana’s symbol is the green dragon, a symbol deeply woven into the fabric of the city’s identity. Located in the center of Ljubljana, the dragon statue stands as a must-visit landmark, inviting visitors to cross the bridge for a touch of good fortune. Legend has it that Ljubljana’s dragon serves as a guardian patron, watching over the city and its inhabitants, offering protection from harm.
The Castle
Ljubljana Castle stands as the landmark of the capital. A quick 20-minute hike rewards you with a breathtaking view of the city below. If hiking isn’t your cup of tea, you can also use an elevator that takes you up to the castle with ease. While the castle houses a museum, I must admit that I would not recommend visiting it.
Insider’s tip: for the ultimate view, head to the Nebotičnik Skyscraper. Here, a rooftop bar awaits, serving delicious cocktails alongside a stunning 360-degree panorama of the city. Trust me, this is an experience not to be missed during your visit!
The Food Market
From mid-March to the end of October, every Friday from 18:00 onwards, food enthusiasts are in for a treat at the Ljubljana Food Market, located at Pogačarjev trg—the city’s main market square. Here, a diverse array of offerings ranging from traditional Sovenian cuisine to falafel and mouthwatering burgers. Whether you are a vegan, vegetarian, or a carnivore, I assure you that there is something to tantalize your taste buds. As a self-professed foodie, this market ranks among my top recommendations that should not be missed. Do keep in mind, however, that the market is weather-dependent and may be canceled in the event of rain, given its open-air kitchen.
The Alternative Quarter and Art Center Metelkova
Metelkova has a vibrant energy as Ljubljana’s alternative quarter. Here, a kaleidoscope of street art, eclectic bars, and clubs converge to create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. Don’t miss the art center, a dynamic exhibition hall that gives small artists a stage. Metelkova’s inclusive vibe makes it a particularly compelling destination for the queer community. You can check out their website for updates on featured artists performing at the various bars and clubs, or simply dive into the experience firsthand. Whether you are drawn by the art, the music, or the unique ambiance, a visit to Metelkova promises an unforgettable adventure.
Ljubljana’s Nightlife
Ljubljana boasts plenty of lively bars and clubs to suit every taste. For a deeper dive into the city’s nightlife offerings, check out my article on Ljubljana Nightlife. There, you will uncover recommendations for bars and clubs, insider tips on where to find the cheapest cocktails, prettiest locations, or even thrilling karaoke nights.
For those wanting to put their knowledge on a test, Ljubljana offers a weekly international pub quiz that’s not to be missed. This became a cherished ritual during my time in Ljubljana, and I enjoyed every moment of it! Test your knowledge and together with fellow quiz enthusiasts for only 4 euros, either joining a group or coming solo and being paired up on the spot. Pro tip: secure your spot by signing up on their website in advance, as seats are limited. The location changes every now and then so you can find all the information and the registration form on their website.
Museums
First things first: On every first Sunday of the months, all national museums of Slovenia have free entrance! Take advantage of this opportunity and make it your designated museum day! Ljubljana has a variety of museums to offer. Personally, I’ve explored five of them: The National Gallery, The Museum of Modern Art, The Slovenian Ethnographic Museum, The Railway Museum, and the Castle of Ljubljana. For detailed insights into each museum and my firsthand experiences, I invite you to check out my article on Ljubljana’s museum scene.
Encounter Curious Residents Along Ljubljana’s Riverbanks
If you’re in the mood for a walk through the city, consider following the river slightly outside of the city center. Along the way, keep your eyes wide open for a delightful surprise: the charming appearance of nutria, also known as coypu. These adorable, beaver-like creatures occasionally show up at the riverside, offering a delightful and unexpected encounter if you are lucky. So take your time, soak in the scenery, and who knows? You might just have an extraordinary wildlife sighting to add to your city trip.
Go Hiking at Šmarna Gora (Mount Saint Mary)
If you are looking for a nature escape, Šmarna gora lays just outside Ljubljana’s city center. Reaching Šmarna gora is easy via the city’s public transport system. I took bus line 8 to get there, but it’s advisable to double-check with Google Maps for alternative routes, since several buses are going there. Once you arrive, you can hike up the hill with multiple trails to choose from and stunning vistas awaiting at the summit. Here you can also reward yourself with a refreshing beverage from one of the cafes located atop the mountain. Hiking Šmarna gora is a beloved local pastime, offering the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, particularly if you are planning an extended stay in Ljubljana and craving some outdoor activity.
How to get around in Ljubljana
On Foot
With Ljubljana’s compact size, exploring the city on foot is not only convenient but also a delightful way to experience the city’s charming atmosphere. Wander through its streets and bustling squares, and maybe you will find some hidden gems along the way.
By Bike
For those seeking a faster or more efficient means of transportation, BicikeLJ city bikes offer a convenient solution. Simply download the app, sign up, and select your preferred payment plan—1 Euro per week or 3 Euros per year—making it an affordable option for exploring the city. The app also provides information on the nearest bike stations, allowing for an easy navigation throughout Ljubljana.
By Bus
You can also use public transport in Ljubljana. For that you can buy a card at a kiosk or gas station and add as much money to the card as you want to. The buses in Ljubljana are good and you can check their timetables through Google Maps. However, they do not go too regularly, so better check in advance.
By Taxi
Slovenian taxis are relatively cheap compared to other European capitals. Typically, a 20-30 minute journey may cost around 10 Euros, and I advise agreeing on the fare before setting off. This ensures transparency and avoids any surprises at the end of your ride.
By Car and Car Rental
While Slovenia has excellent streets, parking in Ljubljana can be challenging. Additionally, most of the center is car-free. Thus, I recommend using a car only for exploring destinations beyond the capital. I had very good rental experiences at Atet Car Rental. With locations in Ljubljana, Ljubljana Airport, Maribor, and Koper, Atet offers good prices, and friendly service, and I always had a smooth experience with them. (This is unpaid advertisement).
Hitchhiking
Hitchhiking can be a viable option for getting around Slovenia, but mostly outside of Ljubljana since the center is car-free. However, it can still be worth a try for short distances if you find yourself slightly outside the central area.
In more rural or suburban areas, hitchhiking can be quite effective. It offers an opportunity to connect with locals and experience the country in a unique way. However, it is important to keep in mind that hitchhiking relies heavily on luck and may not always be the most reliable mode of transportation, especially if you are on a tight schedule. If you are comfortable with the uncertainties and adventures that come with hitchhiking, it can be a rewarding way to explore Slovenia. Just remember to stay safe, trust your instincts, and exercise caution when accepting rides from strangers.
